Isak is currently training alone at his former club, Real Sociedad, while the saga plays out, and as a result of the uncertainty surrounding his future, he was omitted from Newcastle’s preseason tour of Asia.
Newcastle are insistent that Isak will not leave for anything less than a Premier League record fee, forcing Liverpool to trump the £116m package they agreed to pay Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz.
Now, The Athletic reports that the Reds have come forward with a formal offer for the 25-year-old, but Newcastle swiftly rejected their rivals’ advances.
According to additional information from Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool’s offer was worth a staggering £120 million, plus any add-ons, making Isak the most expensive football player in Premier League history.
Despite the Sweden international’s unwavering desire to join the English champions, Newcastle are refusing to let him leave and are unlikely to consider selling until they have reached an agreement on a replacement. Newcastle is not under any obligation to sell Isak because his contract at St. James’ Park runs out in the summer of 2028.
Additionally, the Magpies are said to have been attempting to bind him to a new contract with a release clause. That option would have become available in 2026. Some of Isak’s teammates are said to have tried to get him to stay at St. James’ Park, but he only wants to move to Merseyside in the summer.
